How to Properly Care for Your Newly Painted Interior Walls

Chal • April 24, 2023

Adding a fresh coat of paint to your interior walls can be an enjoyable experience that benefits your property’s overall aesthetics. But even the most durable paint needs proper care and maintenance to maintain its aesthetic appeal and stand the test of time.

If you need tips on how to care for your newly painted walls, look no further. Below, our interior painting experts at OCD Painting and Flooring Inc. explain several ways to care for your newly painted interior walls.

Use the Right Paint

Did you know that the type of paint you choose can affect your new paint’s longevity? Premium paint gives you better value for money, allowing for easier cleaning and better touch-ups.

You also want to pay particular attention to the color, texture, and sheen (gloss levels) of the paint, as these factors determine how long your paint will last in different locations based on factors like abrasion, traffic levels, and exposure to moisture.

Protect Your Walls from Scuffs, Dings, and Scratches

Furniture, shoes, and tossed objects can leave unsightly scuff marks, scratches, or even dings on your interior painting by rubbing against walls.

Your vacuum cleaner or that new piece of furniture you just moved in may take some blame for the damage. If you have young kids, sometimes you can’t tell how they get to the walls.

Chair railing, baseboards, and wainscotting may help to prevent or hide unsightly marks. Also, exercise caution when moving furniture. Ask someone to guide you when moving a chair or table to prevent bumping into walls.

For wall hangings, a small piece of rolled painter’s tape affixed to the back of wall hangings will prevent the frame from shifting or scratching the wall.

Dust Away

In most cases, dusting your walls every couple of months will keep them looking fresh and help maintain a beautiful finish. Simply run a microfiber cloth on a long-handle sweeper over your walls to get rid of any dirt, dust, or cobwebs that shorten the life of your paint.

Vacuuming with a brush or using a clean white cloth wrapped around a broom’s head will work too. You don’t need to move furniture or take down wall hangings. Covered areas rarely get dirty.

Airborne dust may also collect on the ceiling, so don’t forget to clean that as well. Dusting a room should take about ten to 15 minutes.

Wash Your Walls

You want to wait at least two weeks after painting before using any water on your walls. Dampen a soft sponge or cloth with warm water or mild, soapy water, squeezing out any extra water.

Too much water can ruin the paint finish, so remember to wring out the cloth or sponge thoroughly before using it on the wall. Attempt to clean your walls with only warm water first. If you don’t like the results, add some mild soap or a few drops of mild dish detergent.

Gently dab or wipe over the walls, starting at the bottom, and work your way up then rinse well when finished. As you would any surface, try to act quickly and gently. The sooner you address a scuff or any other issue, the better.

Water running down the wall may leave unsightly marks, so wash and dry the walls carefully. If you’re dealing with tough marks, gently rub a small amount of baking soda over the stain. Try to avoid harsh chemicals as they may change the color of your paint and worsen things or force you to do a touch-up.

If you must use a strong chemical, dilute it first and test it in a hidden spot.

Touch Up Damage

Touch-ups need careful preparation. For the best results, use paint from the original can and the original mode of application. If the painter used a brush, for example, use a brush rather than a roller and try to mimic the brush strokes.

In case you have paint left over from your project, mark the paint can with the date and room, then place it in a cool, dry environment. Alternatively, purchase extra paint as soon as you can to keep the color as close to the original as possible. Pay attention to the sheen, matte, and gloss.

Get supplies ready for when you’ll need to do a touch-up. Remember that paint changes slightly in color over time. So, the touch-up might differ slightly from the original color. Dabbing a minimal amount of paint onto the wall may help minimize the color difference.
